A full medical eye examination begins with refraction, checking eye pressure, checking ocular alignment and motility and examining the anterior structure of the eye with specialized slit lamp biomicroscope. A full eye examination often includes dilatation of the pupils so that the posterior structure of the eye, such as retina and optic nerve can be examined.
